Why do my prayers sometimes feel unanswered?

I've prayed for things that never happened. Does God actually hear and answer prayer?

God always hears the prayers of His children (1 John 5:14-15), but "answered" doesn't always mean "yes," and it rarely means "immediately."

Scripture shows God answers prayer in (at least) three ways: yes, no, and wait. Paul asked three times for a "thorn in the flesh" to be removed and was told no, because God's grace and power were better displayed through Paul's weakness (2 Corinthians 12:7-9). Jesus himself prayed "let this cup pass from me," then "yet not as I will, but as you will" (Matthew 26:39).

Unanswered-feeling prayer is also an invitation to examine our motives (James 4:3) and to keep praying persistently, trusting God's timing and wisdom rather than treating prayer as a vending machine (Luke 18:1-8).
