When a person places genuine faith in Jesus Christ, several things happen simultaneously, according to Scripture, even though we don't experience them all consciously.
Regeneration: God gives the believer a new spiritual nature — "if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation" (2 Corinthians 5:17). We move from spiritually dead to spiritually alive (Ephesians 2:1-5).
Justification: God declares the believer righteous, not based on their own performance, but based on Christ's righteousness credited to them (Romans 3:24, 5:1). This is a legal, once-for-all declaration, not a process.
Adoption: the believer becomes an actual member of God's family, with all the rights of an heir (Romans 8:15-17, Galatians 4:4-7).
These realities are the secure foundation for the Christian life that follows — not something we work to earn, but something we grow to increasingly understand and live out.
